Interest payments cost 500+ teachers a year
County Council debts of £324m racked up by the Lib Dems when they last ran the Council are still costing residents £42,000 in interest payments every day, latest analysis shows.
The debt racked up despite council tax rising by 103% over the same time period.
“It’s unbelievable that the Lib Dems let this debt run up for the people of Somerset” said Mandy Chilcott, Conservative Economy spokesperson. “Their failed investments and vanity projects have cost us all – and it’ll take decades to pay the debt off.”
“The Somerset Lib Dems need to have a hard look at what they’re promising to local people at the upcoming election. People have had enough of their council tax being used to pay down the Lib Dem’s absurd debts."
The £42,000 a day in interest alone is enough to fund 511 teachers or fill 150,000 extra potholes annually.
The Somerset Conservatives plans are fully costed and will deliver on the things that really matter.
“We’re going to work with the government to improve public services, keep council tax low and use Council reorganisation to free up nearly £20m extra every year that we can invest in local priorities” said Mandy Chilcott.
