David Fothergill, Conservative Leader of Somerset County Council met with Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer on his recent visit to the West Country to discuss the economic opportunity for the County.
Commenting on their conversation David Fothergill said ‘ Rishi Sunak was the Minister for Local Government when I first met him in 2018 to discuss the move to a Unitary authority. Since then of course he has risen through the Government ranks to be Chancellor but still has a good understanding of our proposal and its benefits to the County. Of course, he is also MP for North Yorkshire who are also following a similar Unitary route’.
'The opportunities for the County are not all about Unitary but also the Gravity site at J23 of the M5, the supply chain opportunities linked to Hinkley Point C and the exciting plans at Leonardo in Yeovil. It is fundamental Conservative policy to support economic growth across the County in order that prosperity can deliver true and meaningful levelling up. Somerset really is a County of opportunity’.
